Holy Week at Home:
Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, with its blend of celebration and solemnity, offers a great opportunity for families to engage in activities that honor Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem while preparing for the deeper journey of Holy Week. Here are some simple, meaningful ideas for families to do at home:

  • Palm Procession at Home

    • What to Do: Make or gather “palms” (real palm leaves, green construction paper cut into strips, or even tree branches). Play a hymn like “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” or sing “Hosanna” together, then march around your yard or living room, waving the palms. Read Matthew 21:1-11 aloud to set the scene.

    • Why It Fits: It recreates the joyful welcome of Jesus, letting kids feel the excitement of the crowd.

  • Donkey Craft

    • What to Do: Create a simple donkey using paper plates (for the body), gray paper (for ears and legs), and a marker (for eyes). Talk about why Jesus rode a humble donkey instead of a horse—peace, not war. Let kids name their donkey and place it near a cross or Bible.

    • Why It Fits: It ties to the humility of Jesus’ kingship, sparking conversation about his mission.

  • Palm Cross Folding

    • What to Do: If you have palm fronds (from church or a craft store), learn to fold them into crosses (plenty of online tutorials exist). As you fold, discuss how the palms of praise lead to the cross of sacrifice. Keep the crosses as a reminder all week.

    • Why It Fits: It connects the day’s joy to the Passion, blending hands-on fun with meaning.

  • Hosanna Prayer Jar

    • What to Do: Cut small paper strips and have each family member write or draw something they’re thankful for about Jesus (e.g., “He loves us” or “He saves us”). Put them in a jar, then take turns pulling one out to say “Hosanna!” and a short prayer of thanks.

    • Why It Fits: It echoes the crowd’s praise, encouraging gratitude and reflection.

  • Passion Story Time

    • What to Do: After the festive activities, sit together and read a kid-friendly version of the Passion (like from a children’s Bible, or summarize Matthew 26-27). Use props like a toy crown, cloak, or cross to act it out. Ask simple questions: “Why did Jesus let this happen?” or “How can we follow him?”

    • Why It Fits: It bridges the triumph to the cross, helping families grasp the full story of Palm Sunday.

These activities are easy to adapt for different ages—keep them light and playful for younger kids or add deeper discussion for older ones. They balance the day’s joy with its sober undertone, making Palm Sunday a memorable kickoff to Holy Week at home.
