Holy Week at Home:
Holy Maundy Thursday

The Triduum Begins

Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday, is a cornerstone of Holy Week in the Catholic tradition, rich with events that blend love, service, and the shadow of impending sacrifice.  The day begins with a sense of closeness and celebration—Jesus sharing a final meal with his friends, giving them the gift of his presence in the Eucharist. The foot-washing adds a tender, servant-hearted tone. But as the night progresses, the mood shifts to one of dread and sorrow. Gethsemane reveals Jesus’ human vulnerability and the weight of what’s coming, while Judas’ betrayal stings with disloyalty.

For Catholics, it’s a day of deep gratitude for the Eucharist and priesthood, tempered by the ache of knowing what follows.

DID YOU KNOW?? The word "Maundy" originates from the Latin word "mandatum," meaning "command" or "mandate," and refers to the Last Supper and Jesus' commandment to "love one another."
