Holy Week at Home:
Good Friday

A day of Abstinence and Fasting

Good Friday carries a heavy, mournful tone—grief for Jesus’ suffering and death, yet a profound gratitude for the salvation it brings. There’s no Mass; instead, the liturgy includes the reading of the Passion (typically from John’s Gospel), veneration of the cross (where people kiss or touch a crucifix), and a stark Communion service using hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. The church is bare, altars empty, and silence prevails—no bells, no music. It’s a day of fasting and penance, reflecting the cost of sin and the price of love.

For believers, the sentiment is complex: sorrow at Christ’s pain, guilt for humanity’s role in it, and hope in the promise of redemption. It’s a time to stand at the foot of the cross, like Mary and John, contemplating the mystery of a God who dies for his people. The day ends in stillness, awaiting the resurrection.
